Cruising on Lough Derg is a popular leisure activity in Ireland. About two hours drive from Dublin will bring you to the town of Ballina in County Tipperary which is separated only by a bridge from the town of Killaloe in County Clare. This is a very scenic area with some interesting historic buildings that date from the thirteenth century. It is situated on the shores of Lough Derg and a good place to stop off for lunch.
There were four adults in our party when we visited Goosers pub and lunch with a round of drinks came to an affordable 75 euro including tip. The menu offered a good choice of dishes — more than you would normally expect on a bar food menu — and the seafood that we selected was excellent.
After lunch we took a cruise with Killaloe River Cruises. The cost for the party of 4 was 50euro (12.50 per adult) and the cruise although advertised to take an hour was closer to 90 minutes. Drinks and coffee were available on board in the downstairs lounge while the scenery could best be taken in on the upper deck. Unobtrusive commentary pointed out places of interest along the way making for an interesting and pleasant Sunday afternoon cruising on Lough Derg.
The nearest hotel, which we spotted from the cruise, is the Lakeside Hotel, County Clare.
