I love Killarney National Park. It extends to more than 20,000 acres, much of it wild and unspoiled and you don’t have to venture very far from the gates on the Muckross Road to enjoy wonderful walks and views.

Earlier this year, strong winds took their toll on around 1,000 of the trees according to the jarvey who chauffeured us around the park in traditional horse-drawn style this weekend.

It cost us €40 for a one-hour trip in a jaunting cart with a friendly guide. The trip took in the lakes, Muckross House and Torc Waterfall and depending on the cart, you can fit about 4 people fairly easily.

Killarney National Park is easily accessible by taxi or jaunting cart from the town of Killarney and you pick up a jaunting cart very close to the mainline train station.
