Clogrennane Woods

Following our overnight stay at The Mount Wolseley Hotel near Tullow in County Carlow, we checked out the tourist literature and opted for a walk in Clogrennane Woods.

According to the brochures, Clogrennane Woods promised an easy walk of about 4km on forest paths and with good views over Carlow town and the River Barrow.

Unfortunately Clogrennane Woods wasn’t listed in the GPS or the iPhone maps app (August 2015) and we ended up taking a rather circuitous route. Had we realised it, we could have perhaps put Tinryland or Clogrenan Bilbao into the GPS and followed the road signs from there.

In the event, from Tullow, we headed towards Carlow town. The 3G signal was poor on the phone and we had difficulty getting a fix on our current location. Eventually, after a while driving around for a while, we found Clogrenan Bilbao on the Garmin GPS and decided to head there keeping an eye out for signs for Clogrennane Woods along the way.

Our route brought us past Milford Mill — a fabulous scenic location and worth a visit in its own right. We stopped to take some photos and made a mental note to return for a picnic one day as this would be an excellent place to laze away a sunny afternoon.

Just beyond Milford Mill we saw a ‘trail finder’ sign which we followed until another sign directed us off this route to the right where, before long, we came across the entrance to Clogrennane Woods.

There was room to park at the entrance to the woods so we left the car and took a leisurely stroll upwards enjoying lovely views through the trees down to Carlow town and the surrounding countryside. It’s a relatively short and easy walk and we were glad we made the effort.

Other places of interest in the general area include Carlow town and Altamont Gardens.
