High Cross at Drumcliffe, County Sligo

The High Cross at St Columba’s Church (Church of Ireland) in Drumcliffe is very easy to spot if you stand with your back to the church and face the tower on the other side of the road. The High Cross is on your left. The purpose of crosses like these was to teach Bible stories to an often illiterate congregation. The cross depicts biblical scenes including Adam and Eve, Daniel in the lion’s den, and the crucifixion. An explanatory brochure in the porch of the Church says that these illustrations would have been painted in bright colours and were used as visual aid for teaching.
