Marian Shrine, Knock, County Mayo

Located just off the N17 between Galway and Sligo, the Marian Shrine, Knock has been attracting pilgrims since the end of the nineteenth century. It was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1979 to mark the centenary of the apparition of the Virgin Mary here in 1879. Easily accessible from the main road, the village has several shops selling religious paraphenalia as well as some coffee shops. There is a map on the way in to the site that points out the various areas that may be of interest to pilgrims. I had stopped off in Knock expecting to find a rather spiritual place and was disappointed to see so much commercialism.
