Some of Ireland’s best free attractions include properties owned by the Office of Public Works. Altamont Gardens, County Carlow, is one such property. Admission is free (except for group guided tours which must be booked in advance) and there is much to see and enjoy.
Situated near Tullow are about 12 minutes by car from the town of Bunclody in County Wexford, Altamont Gardens, County Carlow are beautifully kept mix of formal and informal gardens and riverside walks. I particularly liked the clear labelling of plants throughout the gardens making it easy for would-be gardeners to make a note of anything that catches their eye. And, with a profusion of blossom in evidence in high summer, there is much to take note of here.
Lovers of walled gardens will enjoy the Altamont Walled Garden which is privately run within the grounds. An excellent range of good quality plants, including some fabulous old fashioned plants, is on sale here.
Altamont Gardens, County Carlow are a wonderful gem hidden away in the countryside. If you’re driving from Enniscorthy to Carlow and notice the signpost, take a short diversion and drop in. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
